What is a Mechanical Seal?

A mechanical seal is a device used to contain fluid within a vessel such as a Pump or Mixer. The seal is typically located where a rotating shaft passes through a stationary housing and is comprised of two mating faces – one rotating and one stationary – pushed together by a spring. The faces are precision lapped so they are extremely flat. As the rotating face turns against the stationary, a liquid-tight seal is formed.
