Piston seals maintain sealing contact between a piston and cylinder bore. The moving piston rod generates high pressure on the piston seal which increases contact forces between the seal and cylinder surface. For this reason, the surface properties of the sealing surfaces are critical to proper seal performance. Please contact your local AR Thomson Group for more information.
Rod Seals and Piston Seals
The rod seal is the most critical seal on any type of fluid power equipment preventing leakage of fluid from within the cylinder to the outside. We stock many sizes and styles of hydraulic and pneumatic seals across Canada. We have a variety of materials, configurations and combinations on the shelf and custom styles available for any application. Please contact your local AR Thomson Group for more information.
Function of a rod seal
Leakage through the rod seal can reduce equipment performance, and also in extreme cases can cause environmental issues. Particular attention should be paid to pair the rod seal and the wiper for the best sealing performance. If a less aggressive rod seal is paired with an aggressive wiper, the wiper can scrape off the microscopically thin film of oil that remains on the rod in microscopic surface imperfections during the return stroke, resulting in system leakage.
